Massachusetts State House (gold dome)

The Massachusetts State House at 24 Beacon Street is the seat of the Commonwealth's government, housing the governor's office and the Massachusetts General Court. Its dome was originally covered in wooden shingles, later with copper, and was first gilded with gold leaf in 1874; it has undergone subsequent restoration work to maintain the gilding. The State House sits atop Beacon Hill and is a prominent landmark on the Freedom Trail and in Boston civic life.
