Porirua Lunatic Asylum

The Porirua Lunatic Asylum, established in 1887 in Porirua, New Zealand, was once the largest psychiatric hospital in the country, catering to a diverse range of patients from those with severe mental illnesses to alcoholics. Originally built to alleviate overcrowding at another facility, it grew significantly over the years, housing up to 1,500 residents in the 1940s and employing around 2,000 staff. The hospital underwent various transformations, including the construction of new villas after the 1942 earthquakes and a shift towards community-based care in the late 1980s. Today, the site is home to the Porirua Hospital Museum, which offers a glimpse into its historical significance and the evolution of mental health care in New Zealand.
