Coffin Block Building

The Coffin Block Building, located at the intersection of Front and Church streets in Toronto, is notable for being the city's first flatiron building. Constructed before 1838, this 3-storey Georgian structure originally served as an annex to The Wellington hotel and housed the office of the William Weller Stagecoach Company, which played a crucial role in transportation between Eastern Ontario and Hamilton. Its unique shape is a result of the intersecting roads, making it a distinctive landmark in the area. The building has a rich history, including housing various businesses over the years, and is depicted in historical prints from the early 19th century. Although it was replaced by the Gooderhams' Flatiron Building in the 1890s, the Coffin Block remains an interesting site for tourists and researchers interested in Toronto's architectural heritage.
