Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum heist

The Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum at 25 Evans Way was the scene of a March 18, 1990 art theft in which 13 works were stolen; the stolen pieces have an estimated combined value in excess of $500 million and the case remains unsolved. The museum has left empty frames on the walls where some works hung, and the theft has become one of Boston's best-known unsolved crimes and a lasting element of local lore. The FBI continues to list the case as active and the museum remains open to the public while investigations proceed.
