Formation of the Fisk Jubilee Singers at Fisk University

The Fisk Jubilee Singers were formed in 1871 at Fisk University in Nashville to raise funds for the struggling historically Black college. The ensemble toured nationally and internationally to perform African-American spirituals, helping to introduce that repertoire to broader audiences and generate financial support for the school. Fisk University remains located on its original Nashville campus where the group was organized.
