Eli Lilly & Company's early pharmaceutical manufacturing

Eli Lilly and Company was founded in Indianapolis in 1876 and established factory and laboratory operations in the city. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries Lilly introduced industrialized pharmaceutical manufacturing techniques that scaled drug production beyond small apothecary methods. In 1923 Lilly was among the first companies to produce insulin at industrial scale under license from University of Toronto researchers.
