Fort Wayne (19th-century military fortification)

Fort Wayne is a 19th-century fort constructed between 1846 and 1850 at the junction of the Rouge and Detroit Rivers to protect the Detroit area; its design includes sandstone masonry walls and bastions characteristic of mid-19th-century military architecture. The site contains surviving 19th- and early-20th-century barracks, magazines, and caretaker buildings and has been preserved as a historic park and museum. Fort Wayne played roles in Civil War-era defense planning and later served various military and training functions before becoming a public historic site.
