Menger Hotel

The Menger Hotel, established in 1859 in downtown San Antonio, Texas, is a historic landmark located on the site of the Battle of the Alamo. Originally opened by William and Mary Menger, it became a popular stopping point on the Chisholm Trail, serving cattle drovers and facilitating business transactions among cattle barons. The hotel played a significant role during the Civil War by providing accommodations and meals for Confederate soldiers. After the death of William Menger, his wife Mary continued to manage the hotel, making significant improvements and expanding its facilities. The hotel has undergone various renovations under different owners, including Major J.H. Kampmann, who enhanced its amenities, making it one of the first hotels to offer private bathrooms. The Menger Hotel is not only a place of historical significance but also a vibrant venue that has hosted notable figures, including Teddy Roosevelt. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1977, making it a must-visit for tourists and researchers interested in Texas history.
