Alexander I Palace

The Alexander I Palace, located in Taganrog, Rostov Oblast, Russia, is a historic one-story stone building showcasing Russian classicism. Built in 1806, it is notable for being the place where Emperor Alexander I died in 1825. The palace has a rich history, having been owned by various notable figures, including Governor Pyotr Papkov. It served as a residence for the emperor during his visits in 1818 and 1825. Following his death, the building was purchased by his widow, Empress Elizabeth Alexeievna, and became the first memorial museum in Russia dedicated to the emperor. The palace has welcomed many distinguished visitors, including subsequent Russian emperors, renowned poets like Alexander Pushkin, and famous artist Ivan Aivazovsky. Additionally, it housed a church where an amateur choir, led by Pavel Chekhov, performed for over a decade. Although the memorial museum was closed in 1928, the building now functions as a children's sanatorium named 'Beryozka,' making it a unique site blending history with contemporary use.
