Burning of the United States Capitol (War of 1812)

On August 24, 1814, British troops occupied Washington, D.C., and set fire to multiple government buildings, including the United States Capitol, destroying interior chambers and many records. The destruction at the Capitol was part of the larger British raid that temporarily seized the federal city during the War of 1812. Reconstruction of the Capitol began soon after and continued in the following years.
