Westminster House, Manchester

Westminster House, originally known as County Hall, is a notable commercial building located on Portland Street in Manchester. Constructed between 1971 and 1973, it was designed by Fitzroy Robinson & Partners and served as the headquarters for Greater Manchester County Council until its abolition in 1986. The building features a distinctive design with a main frontage on Portland Street and wings extending along Minshull and Aytoun Streets. After a series of ownership changes and refurbishments, it was renamed Westminster House in 1990, possibly to honor the government that dissolved the council. A significant refurbishment completed in 2017 further modernized the structure, which is now known as 11 Portland Street. This building reflects the architectural evolution and historical governance of Manchester, making it an interesting site for both tourists and researchers.
