Galerie des machines

The Galerie des machines, built for the 1889 Exposition Universelle in Paris, was an architectural marvel made of iron, steel, and glass, designed by engineer Victor Contamin and architect Ferdinand Dutert. Spanning 115 by 420 meters and reaching a height of 48.3 meters, it was the largest vaulted building of its time, showcasing innovative design with no internal supports. Over its 20-year lifespan, it hosted various events, including the French Exhibition of Agriculture and Food in 1900 and cycling competitions. Despite its significance, it was demolished in 1910 to enhance views of the Champ de Mars, leaving behind a legacy celebrated in models displayed at the Musée d'Orsay.
