Houston Astrodome - first major stadium with artificial turf

The Houston Astrodome opened in 1965 as the world's first multi-purpose, domed sports stadium. In 1966 it became the first major stadium to install an artificial playing surface (AstroTurf) after natural grass struggled to grow under the dome. The Astrodome hosted the Houston Astros (MLB) and Houston Oilers (AFL/NFL) home games for decades and was widely promoted at the time as a major engineering landmark.
