Mission San José - native limestone with visible fossils

Mission San José’s church and compound were constructed from native limestone quarried nearby, and many of the dressed stone blocks show visible fossil fragments and shell impressions. These fossils reflect the marine origin of the Cretaceous limestones used by 18th-century builders. The mission is part of San Antonio Missions National Historical Park and is commonly cited for its fossiliferous building stone.
