Paterno Ancestral House

The Paterno Ancestral House, located in Quiapo, Manila, is a historic residential structure dating back to the 1870s. Notable for its unique architecture, the house features volcanic tuff in its construction, which was later banned due to earthquake damage. Its design avoids the floral motifs popular after 1890, showcasing a more understated elegance with simple capiz window panels and Tuscan stone columns. The expansive 1,000-square-meter property includes two courtyards, one enclosed and another U-shaped. Unfortunately, the house is currently in a deteriorating state and has become home to informal settlers, highlighting the challenges of preserving historical sites in urban areas.
