Eastern State Penitentiary's preserved cellblocks

Eastern State Penitentiary, at 2027 Fairmount Avenue, opened in 1829 as a model penal institution and was designated a National Historic Landmark. Al Capone was incarcerated there in 1929–1930; his cell and other inmate cells are preserved as part of the museum's interpretation. The site operates as a historic site with preserved cellblocks, exhibits about prison history, and guided tours.
