Thomas Holland House

The Thomas Holland House, built around 1836 near Hillsboro, Alabama, was a significant historic residence known for its unique two-story dogtrot design, one of the few of its kind in the state. Originally constructed by Thomas Holland, a South Carolinian who expanded his plantation from 40 to over 2100 acres by 1849, the house featured a distinctive layout with enclosed stairways and a central room accessible only from one side. It was recognized for its historical importance, being listed on both the Alabama Register of Landmarks and Heritage and the National Register of Historic Places in 1991. Unfortunately, the house was destroyed by fire in 1997, marking the end of an important piece of Alabama's architectural history.
