16th Avenue Tiled Steps (Hidden Garden Steps)

The 16th Avenue Tiled Steps are a community-created mosaic stairway on the stair block between 16th Avenue and Moraga Street, completed in 2005 by artists and neighborhood volunteers led by Aileen Barr and Colette Crutcher. The mosaic depicts a sea-to-stars theme across hundreds of individually tiled panels and has become a widely photographed public art installation and neighborhood landmark. The project was funded and executed as a grassroots public-art initiative and is maintained by local volunteers and the city.
