Astrodome and the origin of AstroTurf

A common legend is that the Houston Astrodome simply invented artificial turf as a novelty; in reality, natural grass struggled to grow under the Dome's limited sunlight and ventilation, and after the 1965 season the facility installed a synthetic surface. The 1966 installation at the Astrodome was the first major commercial use of the product that became known as AstroTurf, and the name referenced the stadium. The Astrodome is located in the NRG Park complex in Houston.
