Hueco Tanks archaeological rock art and shelters

Hueco Tanks State Historic Site contains more than 2,000 documented prehistoric and historic pictographs on rock shelters and boulders. The site preserves natural rock basins ('huecos') and archaeological deposits showing Indigenous and historic-period use of the area across many centuries. Archaeologists have recorded rock shelter habitation sites and other cultural resources within the park; access to pictograph areas is restricted by a permit system to protect the sites.
