Fort Point built into a rocky promontory under the Golden Gate

Fort Point is a mid-19th-century masonry fort constructed directly onto the granite promontory at the south base of the Golden Gate, an unusual example of heavy masonry fortification integrated with coastal bedrock. Its position beneath the later-built Golden Gate Bridge creates a striking juxtaposition of 19th-century coastal defense engineering and 20th-century suspension-bridge construction. The site's geology and placement on the headland made it strategically important and technically challenging to build and preserve.
