The Alamo and the deaths of defenders (1836)

The Alamo, located at 300 Alamo Plaza, was the site of the 1836 siege and fall on March 6, 1836, when Mexican forces under General Antonio López de Santa Anna overran the Texian garrison. Most Texian defenders were killed during the final assault and in its immediate aftermath; contemporary accounts and later scholarship record executions of some who surrendered or were captured. Historians analyze and sometimes debate the specifics of the treatment of prisoners and whether aspects of the event should be characterized as a massacre.
