Hole-in-the-Rock (Papago Park)

Hole-in-the-Rock is a natural sandstone formation in Papago Park consisting of erosion-formed openings and small cavern-like pockets. The cavities are the result of wind and water erosion in the park's red sandstone. Archaeologists and local historians document Hohokam use of the site as a lookout and for observations; some researchers interpret sunlight alignments through the openings as calendrical markers, though interpretations vary.
