South Mountain Park and Preserve - large municipal mountain preserve

South Mountain Park and Preserve is one of the largest municipally operated parks in the United States, covering over 16,000 acres of desert mountain terrain within Phoenix city limits. The park preserves a continuous stretch of the South Mountains and contains hundreds of miles of multi-use trails. Its extent of rugged mountain landscape inside a major desert metropolitan area is a notable geographic anomaly.
