First telephone installed in the White House

A telephone was installed in the White House during the administration of President Rutherford B. Hayes in the late 1870s; early White House telephone service connected the executive mansion to the Capitol switchboard for direct communication with Congress and other officials. This installation represented the White House’s initial adoption of Alexander Graham Bell’s telephone technology soon after its invention. Later presidential administrations expanded and modernized telephone systems in the White House.
