Carpenter House (Richland Parish, Louisiana)

Carpenter House is a historic antebellum inn located near Delhi, Louisiana, that played a significant role in the 1850s as a stop on the stagecoach line between Vicksburg, Mississippi, and Monroe, Louisiana. This unique one-story structure features gabled frame construction on brick pillars and is notable for its six square wooden columns and the distinctive five layers of sheathing and lining that protect its log walls. The house is steeped in history, with connections to the notorious outlaw Jesse James and Union General Alexander Chambers during the Civil War. Its name is linked to Samuel Carpenter, an outlaw associated with the Cave-in-Rock Bandits, although it is more likely named after Charles Carpenter, who provided horse changes for stagecoaches starting in 1849.
