Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden

The Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, designed by Gordon Bunshaft of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, opened in 1974 as the Smithsonian Institution's museum of modern and contemporary art. Its distinctive cylindrical reinforced-concrete building and elevated plaza are notable examples of mid-20th-century modernist architecture. The adjacent Sculpture Garden on the National Mall displays outdoor works by artists such as Henry Moore and Alexander Calder. The museum maintains a permanent collection and rotating temporary exhibitions of international modern and contemporary art.
