1919 Boston Molasses Flood

On January 15, 1919, a large molasses storage tank in Boston's North End burst, releasing an estimated 2.3 million gallons of molasses in a fast-moving wave. The surge reportedly reached heights up to 25 feet in places, killed 21 people, and injured about 150. The failed tank stood near the site now associated with 529 Commercial Street in Boston.
