Arsenal, Mainz

The Old Arsenal, known as Altes Zeughaus or Zum Sautanz, is a historic building in Mainz that served as the central arsenal of the fortress during the 17th and 18th centuries. Constructed between 1604 and 1605 under the reign of Prince-elector Johann Adam von Bicken, it features a distinctive three-winged design with a prominent spiral staircase and rich Dutch gables. Originally used for storing cannons and ammunition, the building has undergone significant changes, including damage during World War II and subsequent reconstruction. Today, it houses the Rhineland-Palatinate state chancellery and parts of the Landtag, making it a notable site for both tourists and researchers interested in the region's military and architectural history.
