Philadelphia Zoo - America's first true zoo

The Philadelphia Zoo, opened in 1874 on West Girard Avenue, is widely recognized as the first true zoological garden in the United States built for public exhibition. The zoo occupies more than 42 acres and has been a longstanding neighborhood and city attraction offering animal exhibits, conservation programs, and educational outreach.
