Waag (Paramaribo)

The Waag is a historic weigh house located on the Waterkant in Paramaribo, Suriname, recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Built around 1686, it served as a tax collection point for goods arriving in the colony. After a devastating fire in 1821, it was rebuilt in 1824 by architect Willem de Vroome. The structure, notable for its plastered brick construction, features two stories and large piers extending towards the Suriname River. Once a center for commerce, it has been restored and now houses a restaurant and the Rotary Club, making it a vibrant tourist attraction and a part of the local nightlife.
