The Illinois Department of Mines and Minerals' Springfield Mine Rescue Station, established in 1911, is a historic facility in Springfield, Illinois, recognized as the first state-run institution in the U.S. dedicated to mining disaster prevention and response. Following the tragic Cherry Mine disaster of 1909, which highlighted the urgent need for improved mining safety, the Illinois government created this station to train miners and rescue teams in emergency preparedness.
