Watergate break-in and ensuing scandal

On June 17, 1972, five men were arrested for breaking into the Democratic National Committee headquarters in the Watergate office complex. The break-in and subsequent cover-up investigations expanded into the Watergate scandal, prompting congressional hearings, criminal convictions of administration officials, and extensive journalism. Facing near-certain impeachment, President Richard Nixon resigned from office on August 8, 1974.
