Exeter (Leesburg, Virginia)

Exeter was a remarkable late 18th-century Georgian house located near Leesburg, Virginia, known for its elaborate architecture and historical significance. Built around 1790 by Dr. Wilson Cary Selden, the house served as a plantation centerpiece and played a notable role during the American Civil War, being used as a headquarters by Confederate General Jubal Early. The house featured a striking two-story Ionic portico and retained much of its original woodwork. Unfortunately, Exeter was destroyed by fire in 1980, leading to its removal from the National Register of Historic Places. Today, visitors can explore the surrounding area and learn about its rich history, including its connections to prominent historical figures and events.
