St. Francis Hotel damaged in the 1906 earthquake and fires

The St. Francis Hotel at Union Square sustained heavy damage during the April 18, 1906 earthquake and the subsequent fires that destroyed much of central San Francisco. Contemporary accounts and later histories document that the hotel was gutted and required extensive rebuilding before reopening. The building's damage and reconstruction are frequently cited in accounts of the city's post‑quake recovery.
