Chkalov Stairs

The Chkalov Stairs, located in the heart of Nizhny Novgorod, is the longest staircase in Russia, featuring 560 steps and designed in a figure of eight shape. Connecting Minin and Pozharsky Square with the Upper and Lower Volga embankments, it offers stunning views from its observation platforms. The staircase, inaugurated in 1949, commemorates the victory of the Battle of Stalingrad and is named after the aviator Valery Chkalov, whose monument stands at its base. A popular site for both locals and tourists, the stairs host various events, including sports races, and underwent restoration in 2012-2013.
