Main Guard (Clonmel)

The Main Guard is a historic former courthouse located in the heart of Clonmel, Ireland, north of the River Suir. Built in 1674 after the Siege of Clonmel, it served as a courthouse for the Palatinate of County Tipperary and was notable for hosting King James II in 1689. The building features classical architectural elements and has undergone significant restoration since the 1990s, returning its original sandstone arcade to the streetscape. As a protected structure and National Monument, it reflects the rich history of the area, including its role in legal proceedings and local governance.
