Contemporary Jewish Museum (adaptive reuse and Libeskind addition)

The Contemporary Jewish Museum occupies a 1907 former power substation at 736 Mission Street that was adaptively reused and expanded with a Daniel Libeskind-designed addition opened in 2008. The project combines the original masonry/industrial structure with a free-standing stainless-steel-clad cube and reconfigured interior galleries. The building is frequently cited as an example of integrating historic preservation with contemporary museum architecture in San Francisco. Elements of the original substation fabric remain visible alongside the modern geometries introduced by Libeskind.
