National Museum of African American History and Culture

The Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture opened on September 24, 2016, on the National Mall and is the nation’s first national museum devoted exclusively to African American life, history, and culture. Its three-tiered bronze-colored metal lattice exterior was inspired by Yoruban crown forms and was co-designed by David Adjaye and a team of architects. The museum's collections and exhibitions cover slavery, segregation, the civil rights movement, and African American contributions in arts, science, and politics.
