L'Enfant plan and Masonic symbolism (disputed)

Popular accounts claim Pierre Charles L'Enfant or early planners intentionally embedded Masonic symbols into Washington's street and avenue layout. Archival research and most historians find no contemporary evidence that L'Enfant designed the city with Masonic symbolism and consider the claim speculative. The idea persists in popular literature and tours but is not supported by primary planning documents.
