Locust Level

Locust Level is a historic house and farm located in Montvale, Bedford County, Virginia, built around 1824. This two-story brick I-house features exquisite Federal-style detailing and a distinctive standing seam metal roof. The property includes a unique Hall or Dance Hall wing, a kitchen and dining room building, a free-standing chimney, and several other structures, including a family cemetery. Originally constructed by Paschal and Frances Ann Otey Buford, the site has historical significance tied to the Mathews family and the land's royal grant from George III. Notably, it is rumored to be near the location of the treasure described in the Beale ciphers. Locust Level was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1990, making it a fascinating destination for tourists and researchers alike.
