Spirit of Detroit sculpture

The Spirit of Detroit is a large bronze sculpture by Marshall Fredericks, installed in 1958 on the Coleman A. Young Municipal Center and facing Woodward Avenue. The statue is a common site for public gatherings, spontaneous tributes, and celebratory photos; people often photograph or drape jerseys and signs on the statue during sports victories or civic events. Images of the sculpture are widely circulated in local and national media as an emblem of Detroit.
