The Old House, Milverton

The Old House in Milverton, Somerset, is a remarkable Grade II* listed building with origins dating back to the late 14th and early 15th centuries. Originally constructed as a residence for the archdeacon of Taunton, it notably housed Thomas Cranmer in the 1530s. This historic site features distinctive red sandstone and Hamstone dressings. A fascinating discovery during its early 21st-century renovation revealed a unique Tudor wall painting of Henry VIII, the only one found in a domestic setting, which has sparked speculation about a hidden message within the artwork, dated to around 1541. The house remained in church ownership until the mid-20th century, making it a significant landmark for both tourists and researchers interested in English history.
