Tontine Coffee House

The Tontine Coffee House, established in 1793 at 88 Wall Street, was a bustling hub for trade, politics, and social interaction in Manhattan. Originally built by stockbrokers as a meeting place, it played a crucial role in the early development of stock trading in New York City, leading to the creation of the New York Stock Exchange. The coffee house was known for its vibrant atmosphere, where individuals from all social classes gathered to engage in business, political discussions, and even gambling. It witnessed political tensions, particularly during the French Revolution, and served as a venue for auctions and events. Although it transformed into a tavern and later a hotel, the original structure was demolished in 1855, marking the end of an era for this iconic establishment.
