Newtown Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant and CSO outfalls

The Newtown Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant, operated by the NYC Department of Environmental Protection, receives combined sewer flows from large parts of northern Brooklyn and western Queens. The facility discharges treated effluent to Newtown Creek and is adjacent to multiple combined sewer overflow (CSO) outfalls that historically released untreated stormwater and sewage into the creek during heavy rain events. The plant and the outfalls have been focal points in city and federal remediation and infrastructure projects addressing urban stormwater pollution in Newtown Creek.
