Grumblethorpe

Grumblethorpe is a historic house located in Germantown, Philadelphia, built in 1744 by merchant John Wister. Initially a summer residence, it became the family's year-round home during the Yellow Fever Epidemic of 1793. The house, known for its stone and oak facade, served as a working farm and was influential in Philadelphia's horticultural trends for nearly two centuries. Notably, it was occupied by British General James Agnew during the Battle of Germantown in 1777, where he was mortally wounded. Restored in the 1960s, Grumblethorpe now operates as a museum within the Colonial Germantown Historic District, showcasing its rich history and gardens.
