High Hollow

High Hollow, also known as the George Howe House, is a historic residence located in Chestnut Hill, Northwest Philadelphia. Designed by architect George Howe between 1914 and 1917, the house showcases a Neo-Norman style influenced by European architecture. It is constructed from purplish stone sourced from a local quarry and is renowned for its intricate metalwork created by blacksmith Samuel Yellin. Overlooking Fairmount Park and the Wissahickon Valley, High Hollow is celebrated as one of Howe's most significant works and has influenced residential design in the region. The property has a rich history, having been owned by cigar mogul Samuel Paley and his wife Goldie, who were prominent figures in American media. After their tenure, the house was donated to the University of Pennsylvania and later changed hands several times, with efforts made to preserve its original character.
