Commemorative stones and Masonic emblems in the Washington Monument

During 19th-century construction of the Washington Monument, more than 150 commemorative stones donated by U.S. states, cities, fraternal organizations, and foreign governments were installed in its interior and lower exterior walls. Several of these stones bear Masonic emblems or inscriptions, which has fed local lore and discussion about fraternal involvement in the monument's fundraising and ceremonies. The stones are documented by National Park Service records and remain a visible historical feature of the monument.
