Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum and 1990 art heist

The Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, housed in a Venetian-style palazzo and opened in 1903, is located on the Fenway and holds a diverse collection of European, Asian, and American art assembled by its founder. On March 18, 1990, the museum was the site of a major art theft in which 13 works (including pieces attributed to Vermeer and Rembrandt) were stolen; the case remains unsolved and the missing artworks have not been recovered. The museum's courtyard and display arrangement reflect Isabella Gardner's original installation and continue to draw cultural interest and research.
