Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum heist

On March 18, 1990 two men posing as police officers entered the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum and stole 13 works of art, including paintings by Vermeer and Rembrandt, in one of the largest art thefts in U.S. history. The stolen pieces have an estimated combined value often cited at around $500 million, and none of the works have been recovered. The museum at the Fenway still displays the empty frames where the stolen paintings hung and the FBI continues to list the case as active.
